Professional Profile or Short Bio
Elvie Schooley is a cultural community developer and indigenous art advocate. Elvie uses her stage as a guest speaker to inspire and share her knowledge and experience of cultural awakening to promote the value of protecting diverse cultures.
Elvie also has extensive training as an African Folkloric Performer who has held stage at Austin City Limits, Circuit of the Americas, and Sierra Nevada World Music Festival. She received her extensive dance training under the leadership of Moustapha Bangoura and Youssouf Koumbassa within the United States and in Guinea Conakry West Africa.
Since 2010 Elvie Schooley has worked with various cultural arts communities as a member, patron, artist, developer, and within management. She received her Master’s in Social Work Administration from Texas State University San Marcos, Texas in 2013.
Elvie completed her Teaching Excellence Training with the National Dance Institute of New Mexico in 2014 enhancing her skills for working with youth populations.
DRUM the Program is Elvie’s creative teaching platform. It is designed for building community through engaging participants in cultural arts activities that support the development of self-esteem, and cultural diversity awareness.
Congo Square ATX was launched by Elvie in 2016 to provide a stage for Austin’s Indigenous artist. Congo Square ATX highlights artist working with youth and communities for the preservation of cultural heritage.
Elvie’s current project is the third annual “Congo Square ATX 2019.”
