We are thrilled to report that the Southern Arts Federation’s dance touring initiative, a major new effort to develop stronger dance presentation and audiences for modern dance and contemporary ballet, is off to an exciting start! This summer and fall, SAF brought together 11 presenters at the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival and Performing Arts Exchange (PAE) conference. At Jacob’s Pillow, presenters along with SAF staff and our consultant team attended several performances and participated in thought-provoking discussions with Pillow staff, scholars, and choreographers. We also had the unique opportunity to join choreographer Doug Varone for a conversation about his work and a movement exercise that improved our understanding of how dance is developed. At PAE, presenters attended showcases and professional development workshops, met with agents representing numerous dance companies, and began conversations with the staff of American Dance Festival, Dance/USA and National Dance Project. As hoped, these experiences are helping to build a strong network of dance presenters in our region. The group is now in the process of selecting a dance company to perform and provide residency activities in each of their communities next season. We will keep you informed of the tour dates and locations so you can participate!
