Sanja Korman, Fine Arts Curriculum Specialist in Dance for the Houston Independent School District (HISD), sent the following information to the K-12 Online Forum hosted by the National Dance Education Organization (NDEO) in response to a message from the secretary of the NDEO. The Alabama Dance Council would like to share this information with our community:

Hello Texas dancers and fellow NDEO members,
We are thinking of you and wishing the Texas dance community a speedy recovery from Hurricane Harvey. We will be sending a donation to the cause in the spirit of fellowship and assistance as you put your personal, family, and work lives back together. If there is a specific area of need for dance or other suggestions for donation recipients, please let us know.

Warmest regards,
Suzie

Thank you for your help and encouraging words.
At this moment we still do not have the exact numbers – but this is what we know so far for Houston area:
Houston Independent School District (HISD) is one of the largest urban school districts in the US, and all schools have water damage. From 275 schools about 200 schools flooded, but could be cleaned and ready for our students to start school on Sep. 11.

However, 75 schools are damaged so much that they will need a long time to be repaired. Out of those 75 schools, 22 schools are completely devastated, beyond reparation.

HISD is providing three meals daily for all students free of charge, for the entire school year 2017-2018. HISD is not going to require uniforms until January 2018. Many students will not have basic school supplies, yet alone dance outfits. There are 65 dance teachers employed in HISD throughout elementary, middle and high schools. Those teachers have been asked to come to work on Sep. 8 and they will be able to assess their needs and let us know.

In the meantime if you would like to donate to HISD Dance teachers/programs – please write the check to HISD Fine Arts Department with a letter as to what the money should be spent for. This will allow us to collect donations as well, ensure your donations are contributed to the right areas.

To ensure your donations are coming to the right place: Please write the check to the HISD Fine Arts Department with an attached letter about your wishes regarding donation distribution (dance equipment, etc.) and send everything to:
Wenden Sanders , Fine Arts Director
Hattie Mae White ESC

Thank you to all who are thinking of us here in Houston and planning to send donations.
