Trivia question: Who was the first company in Alabama to perform George Balanchine's Serenade?

Answer: The University Ballet (later known as Ballet UAB) with Stevan Grebel as director. Frederic Franklin set the ballet on the company in 1972. Mr. B sent one of the New York City Ballet's costumes, designed by Karinska, to UAB for the seamstresses to copy. Frederic Franklin also set the ballets Giselle, Con Amore, Raymonda and Swan Lake Act II on the company.

The students of Grebel Ballet and The Alabama Youth Ballet Company share such a wonderful legacy!
