A teaching artist is a triple-threat professional: a working artist, a working educator and a master collaborator. As a working artist you are constantly involved in the ongoing process of discovery, problem solving, and refinement of your artistic skills. In the K-12 classroom you must also be an effective partner in education. Working with the classroom teachers and the students you are a master collaborator achieving multiple goals and outcomes. Achieving a meaningful balance between these three professions, whereby one feeds the other, is an ongoing process that requires a deepening awareness for the teaching artist of what their teaching brings to their art and what their art teaches them about learning.
In this two day Professional Development Institute taught by Celeste Miller for teaching artists of all disciplines (dance, music, theatre, visual arts, media) participants will develop skills for balancing these three professions. The institute will be broken down into three key areas:
* The intersection between practicing your art form and teaching in the K-12 classroom environment.
* Designing arts-infused curriculum lessons and units in partnership with classroom teachers.
* Designing meaningful documentation and assessment tools.
Whether you are new to the field of Teaching Artistry, or presently a practicing Teaching Artist, this institute will provide you with a professional development opportunity to expand your skills for successful arts & education partnerships. Learn how to deepen your awareness of the creativity that the practice of your art form brings to the classroom, and the creative fuel that you can derive from teaching.
Participants are also invited to attend the full day Curriculum in Motion® on Friday January 15 to meet and actively design lessons and units in collaboration with Alabama educators for future residencies. This workshop is co-sponsored by the Alabama Dance Council, Alabama Institute for Education in the Arts, and the Cultural Alliance of Greater Birmingham.
