LOCAL BELLY DANCERS TAKE THE STAGE TO SHIMMY FOR THE CUREBIRMINGHAM, AL– In an effort to raise money and awareness for breast cancer research, the world-renowned belly dance troupe Devyani Dance Company will host a special performance on the UAB campus this Friday, September 18.Susan G. Komen for the Cure Board of Directors Vice President Rebecca DiPiazza Rawson, herself a cancer survivor, will address the crowd to kick off the show. Donations received will benefit the Susan G. Komen for the Cure breast cancer foundation, while the performance itself is aimed at raising awareness for the upcoming 2009 Race for the Cure and the intensive breast cancer research efforts continually made at UAB. UAB is a recipient of the Susan G. Komen National Research Foundation Promise grant, which awarded UAB’s Comprehensive Cancer Center with $6.4 million; only four of these grants were awarded across the nation.Current efforts for breast health awareness focus on the importance of early cancer detection. Routine mammograms are suggested for women of average risk over the age of 40, although all women are encouraged to perform monthly self-exams. UAB has unprecedented imaging capabilities in the event an abnormal area is found by utilizing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), mammography, and ultrasound technologies.Breast cancer research at UAB studies the basic biology of breast cancer for the purpose of identifying molecular markers that will detect whether a woman is at an above average risk for breast cancer; inform doctors if a woman has breast cancer before an affected area is even detectable; and expose targets for therapeutic agents that can destroy the cancer cells once a woman has been diagnosed.Devyani Dance Company is well known for their stance on the acceptance of a woman’s body regardless of its size, age, or shape. The studio and its classes are tailored to provide a warm, loving atmosphere where women can feel included and safe. The show will begin at 6pm in the Margaret Spain Cameroon Auditorium, located at 7th Avenue and 19th Street South.
