Birmingham-Southern’s 2011 spring dance concert to take on celebratory tone
BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Birmingham-Southern student dancers will grace the stage in March for “Timeless,” three special evenings devoted to celebrating the strides made in the college’s dance program and the legacy of those who’ve contributed to its growth over the years.
The performances, hosted by the Department of Theatre and Dance, will be held March 3-5 at 7:30 p.m. on the College Theatre’s main stage. The show will run approximately 90 minutes with a 10-minute intermission.
Dance styles used in this year’s production will feature classical and contemporary ballet as well as modern—performed by 24 students.
The performances will feature original works by guest choreographers Stephen Wynne, director of TalkDance and associate professor of dance at Mississippi’s Belhaven University, and Allyne Gatrell, founder and artistic director of Atlanta’s newest professional company called the Atlanta Dance Connection; BSC Adjunct Dance Professor Teri Weksler; Jenna McKerrow Wilson, the newest member of the college’s dance staff who is restaging excerpts from “Swan Lake;” as well as BSC student-choreographed works by Joanna Carter, Liz Cochran, Jon Caspian Collins, and Ashley McQueen.
“Timeless” is being directed by Jacqueline Crenshaw Lockhart, the newly appointed director of dance at BSC following the retirement of the program’s two longtime professors. Lockhart is a 1985 graduate of the college.
“Our dedication to rendering a dynamic performance is in honor of those who came before us and left an indelible mark,” said Lockhart. “The performances are a testament to what happens when we understand that life is about something greater than ourselves … it’s about the willingness to use our purpose to inspire others to do great things.”
