Stevan Grebel presents the comedic ballet  Coppélia this weekend, May 18 at 3pm, at Pelham High School Theatre. While the story and music date back to the mid 19th century, the whimsical, playful banter between it's lovers Swanilda (Anna Spencer of John Carroll Catholic High School) and Franz (Ian Adams, a senior dancer at Birmingham-Southern College) can translate to any generation, old or young.  Grebel's portrayal of this classical tale has a life and vibrancy that is perfect for a family afternoon out or a date with a loved one.

Farewell Freddie                            Freddie Franklin
                            June 13, 1914-May 4, 2013

Stevan and Deborah Grebel, directors, dedicate this performance to the memory of Freddie Franklin, a mentor and special friend of Stevan Grebel, and who set Coppélia in 1973 on Ballet UAB when Debbie first danced the role of one of Swanilda's friends and Coppélia. Freddie Franklin (Frederic Franklin) was an icon of ballet, an original member of the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, dancing notably with Aleksandra Danilova and working with George Balanchine. He was the director of National Ballet of Washington, D.C, when he mentored and directed Stevan upon his arrival to the US. Born in Liverpoool, England, Freddie was  98 years old when he passed on May 4, 2013 in New York. Freddie performed with ABT until the age of 92, doing character roles such as the Friar in Romeo and Juliet and the Witch in La Sylphide. His sparkling blue eyes, perfect posture and photographic memory for every ballet he ever performed, are just a few of the memories we have of him. Heaven is lucky to have him now, and we will hold your memory forever...miss and love you, Freddie!
