Recent advances in brain research show that more of the brain is activated during physical activity than when doing seatwork. Additional research shows that movement is most students’ preferred mode of learning – because they best understand concepts when they’re physically experienced. And yet, as educators, we are often the least secure with offering our students kinesthetic experiences in the classroom. Celeste Miller, designer of Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival’s Curriculum in Motion® and national faculty for Lesley University’s Integrated Teaching Through the Arts M.Ed. program, breaks down the kinesthetic mode in a safe, fun and easy-to-apply way. This innovative arts-integration method offers tools and strategies for using kinesthetic learning to engage students more deeply in their curricular units of study, from science to math, social studies to ELA. By the end of this daylong workshop you will be confident and full of ideas for using the kinesthetic learning mode in your teaching. In addition, you will be meeting and working with Alabama Teaching Artists interested in co-designing arts-infused residencies. These residencies are collaboratively designed with the artist and the classroom teacher using the art form to enhance the teaching of academic curriculum. This workshop is co-sponsored by the Alabama Dance Council, Alabama Institute for Education in the Arts, and the Cultural Alliance of Greater Birmingham.
