The Alabama Asian Cultures Foundation, in partnership with The Korea Society, will host the Chae Hyang Soon Dance Company in Birmingham for a one night only performance on September 24, 2010. This performance, entitled Dynamic Korea: Dance and Song, is part of a national tour organized by The Korea Society, a private, nonprofit, nonpartisan, 501(c)(3) organization that is dedicated solely to the promotion of greater awareness, understanding and cooperation between the people of the United States and South Korea. The nonprofit Alabama Asian Cultures Foundation is honored to have secured one of only five performance venues in the United States for this outstanding touring company from South Korea.Led by their internationally recognized and honored artistic director, Chae Hyang Soon, a professional dancer who imparts flair and vision to traditional Korean music and dance, the Company that bears her name has performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. and the Asia Pacific Peach Foundation. In addition they have participated at events including the tenth anniversary festival of the Seoul Olympics, the opening and closing performances of the Winter Universiade, and South Korea’s presidential inauguration.Featuring traditional Korean percussion and dance, some rarely seen outside Korea, the performances to be offered include: “Lotus Dance,” “Monk’s Dance,” “Drum and Hat Dance,” “Hourglass Drum Dance,” “Wind Drum” and others.The 8:00 p.m. performance on Friday evening, September 24, will be held at the Virginia Samford Theatre (1116 South 26th Street), with a post-performance dessert reception to honor the dancers.Preceding the performance at 6:30 p.m. will be a buffet dinner honoring The Korea Society and supporters who are making this event possible.Tickets for the performance are $25.00 for adults (18 and over) and $10.00 for seniors (65 and over), children, and college students with proper ID.
