This performance will present the world premier of a major new work by award-winning choreographer Reggie Wilson, Founder and Artistic Director of Reggie Wilson/Fist and Heel Performance Group. Reggie Wilson’s work draws on traditions that range from the earliest fist and heel styles developed during the slaving era to the step dances that gave rise to urban dance sensations like the Big Apple, Lindy Hop, Electric Slide, and Chicago-Style Stepping.
SDW Artistic Director Teri Weksler will stage a work that was originally commissioned by the Alabama Ballet, Bonhomie, featuring Schumann’s Piano Fantasies accompanying this piece for seven dancers. The program will also include a work by Ashley McQueen, a talented young local choreographer, entitled Corruption that is set to excerpts from Handel’s Messiah. Completing the repertoire, Germaul Barnes’ Distinct Destiny With An Open Fist is a mesmerizing dance created on the company in 2010 to an exciting score by Aranis, whose premiere earned the company a five-star review from Birmingham News’ dance critic Michael Huebner – “this was one of the finest indigenous modern dance programs in Birmingham in a long while. Weksler’s efforts deserve more showings.”
This project is made possible by grants from the Alabama State Council on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham.
