The Alabama State University Department of Theatre Arts is proud to announce the presentation of its Fall 2017 dance concert titled The Alabama Project.  The performance will take place October 11-14 nightly at 7pm in the Leila Barlow Theater on the campus of Alabama State University.  In celebration of the State of Alabama’s bicentennial the department’s BFA Dance Program will present a concert of dance celebrating the music, visual art and/or creative writing of artists and individuals who hail from the state through engaging, illuminating, and thought-provoking choreography that ranges from ballet to jazz.

The BFA/Dance Program has invited several regional and nationally acclaimed guest choreographers to be a part of this special project.  From the University of Alabama’s dance program professors Sarah M. Barry and Lawrence Jackson will respectively create a modern and jazz dance work using the music of Birmingham native Sun Ra and Tuskegee’s favorite son, Lionel Richie.  Commissioned to create a work for the dance program’s graduating seniors, DeShona Pepper-Robertson, dance director of Dayton, Ohio’s Stivers School of the Arts and former member of the critically acclaimed Dayton Contemporary Dance Company will pay homage to Heiberger, AL native Coretta Scott King, wife of Civil Rights leader and Montgomery resident Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The talented members of the ASU dance faculty, James Atkinson, Kavin Grant, Michael Medcalf and new faculty member Lindsay Renea Benton works will feature music from the Temptations, Alabama Shakes, poetry and visual projections from Alabama artists and more!

In addition, at the Saturday evening performance the department will also be honoring Tuskegee native, Dyann Robinson, Artistic Director of the Tuskegee Repertory Theatre for her global significance and impact as a dance artist from the State of Alabama with a special presentation.

Funding to support this project was received by a grant from the Alabama State Council on the Arts and is officially endorsed by the Alabama Bicentennial Commission.
