Alfonso Figueroa is back in Birmingham setting a new ballet on the company. The Awakening tells the true story of the birth of ballet in Birmingham and the impact Virginia Simpson had on the city. Awakening unfolds through the eyes of Figueroa and his relationship with Simpson and the ballet company. Audiences will be swept away by a moving score while they experience the tragedy of losing someone so kind to a ruthless homicide.
The citizens of Birmingham are called to pay tribute to this woman who was more than a wife, mother, patron, and muse. She was a fearless leader who tore down the walls between race, gender, and economic class and brought unity to our city.
The Professional Repertory Company is comprised of 11 professionals who present Figueroas works along with new masterpieces by Cindy Free as well as an eclectic mix of new pieces by emerging talents in the dance world. They are featured in the Family Series productions in favorites including The Nutcracker and The Sleeping Beauty.
