The Alabama Youth Ballet Company presents The Fairy DollStevan Grebel's new version of The Fairy Doll will be a revival of this forgotten ballet and a world premiere, since his revival of the "Pas de Tois" last spring. The story derives its inspiration from the Viennese ballet of 1888 by Joseph Bayer titled "Die Puppenfee" ("The Fairy Doll"), and is about the after-hours amusement among all the toys in the store that occurs when the store is closed. An alternative to The Nutcracker to initiate young audiences to appreciate the art of ballet, Fairy Doll is a ballet in two acts with music by Josef Bayer. The story is set in a toy shop. The owner shows dolls to different customers. After the shop closes, the dolls come to life and dance both alone and with each other all led by the Fairy Doll.In a book about Edwin Denby, the influential dance critic, it is written that it was whenhe attended a performance of "Puppenfee" in Vienna as a child of 7 years that he decided that he wanted a life in the dance world.
