James R. Atkinson Jr, is a native of Connecticut. He received his MFA
from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts and a BFA from
SUNY Purchase College Conservatory of Dance and earned the highest
rank in Boys Scout of America, Eagle Scout.
Professor Atkinson, debuted as a professional dancer with the Dance
Theatre of Harlem Ensemble. He was selected to perform with Ballet
Preljocaj during their American at Purchase College and was
subsequently a company member for Ballet British Columbia, Compania de
Danza Contemporanea de Burgos, Sacramento Ballet, Capacitor, Oakland
Ballet and Jose Mateo Ballet Theatre. Professor Atkinson was also a
soloist with Columbia City Ballet, and a principal dancer with the New
England Ballet Company. In recognition of his outstanding artistry, he
was featured in Pointe Magazine (June/July 2005), where he was
described as a “powerful presence” by Editor-In-Chief, Virginia
Johnson and he also appeared on the cover of the New York Times “Arts”
section in February 2005 for his work in Columbia City Ballet’s “Off
the Wall.”
He is the founding Executive and Artistic Director of Classical
Contemporary Ballet Theater and part of the Bedford Stuyvesant
Restoration Choreoquest Program. Previously, He was the Artistic
Director of Ballet Savannah, Oakland Dance Studios, and one of the
Resident Choreographer for Burklyn Ballet Theatre summer program.
