Dancer/Choreographer Katherine “Kat” Files (New York, New York) is a 2015 graduate of the Ailey/Fordham University B.F.A. Program in Dance and a Glorya Kaufman Foundation Dance Scholar. Katherine is the first Alabama School of Fine Arts (ASFA) graduate accepted to the prestigious Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater (AAADT)/Fordham University at Lincoln Center program, and she was the recipient of the Prix d’ Excellence de Dance Award, the highest award given in Dance at ASFA. Most recently, Kat performed in the 5th Annual Brooklyn Dance Festival at the BAM Fisher Theater and Kumble Theater, LIU in a work by noted choreographer Sidra Bell.
During Kat's senior year, she was a selected member of the Ailey/Fordham Student Dancers and performed at local NYC schools. In 2013 & 2014, Kat performed in Alvin Ailey's "Memoria" during the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater's New York City Season. She also performed on CBS New York, worked with Matthew Rushing on “Into the Void” that was performed at the Park Avenue Armory, and participated in numerous B.F.A. dance performances at the Ailey Citigroup Theater in New York City. Kat has had the opportunity to perform in the works of such acclaimed choreographers as Sidra Bell, Darrell Moultrie, Norbert De La Cruz III, Astrid Von Ussar, Troy Powell, Sylvia Waters, Ronnie Favors, Matthew Rushing, Ronald K. Brown, Sonia Dawkins, Germaul Barnes, Hope Boykin, Darshan Bhuller, Alexandre Proia, Allyne Gartrell, Carlos Dos Santos and Camille A. Brown. She was accepted into the AAADT Mentorship program and assigned to principal dancer Alicia Graf Mack. Kat has also served as an intern with the Daisha and Alicia Graf Arts Collective.
Kat enjoys sharing her talent and encouraging others to pursue their dream of dance through community service such as work with Metropolitan Youth Orchestras of Central Alabama/Scrollworks, Woodlawn Ballet, Birmingham City Schools and Tuscaloosa City Schools. During the Summer of 2014, she had the privilege of teaching a Horton Masterclass at the historic Carver Theatre in Birmingham, Alabama. It was from this experience that Kat created The FILES (Future Inspired Leaders Exemplifying Success) Arts Project. Ms. Files is originally from Birmingham, AL.
